Sex

View this page in: English | Nederlands

Sex is a biological distinction between two or more categories (sexes) within a species, such as male and female, which combine genetic material to reproduce. Conventionally it refers to a person’s classification as male or female based on their anatomical, reproductive and chromosomal characteristics (amongst others).

As these characteristics may suggest that a post-operative transsexual or intersex individual can be conflicting in their indication of sex, some people (notably queer theorists and intersex activists) have suggested that conventional binary (male/female) sexual classification is a false dichotomy.
