Boston

Dr Stan Ducharme
Boston Medical Centre
720 HARRISON AVE STE 906
BOSTON MA 02118-2334
1617 638 7358
Email: ducharme@bu.edu
NOTE: Some people have reported a positive experience with Dr Ducharme; others, however, have been denied hormones by him because, according to him, they passed well enough without hormones. One person said the following:
“My experience involved the line, ‘just wait a few more months so I can get to know you better.’ … Unfortunately, at the end of 2-3 more months, the line was used again, and again … Personally I felt that Dr. Ducharme has a hard time understanding people who do not fit the stereotypical masculine role [for FTMs], yet still want to transition.” Caveat emptor.

Fenway Health
Four locations in Boston, main location at:
Fenway Health
Ansin Building
1340 Boylston Street
BOSTON MA 02215
Website: http://fenwayhealth.org/

En español: 1617 927 6460)
TTY: 1617 859 1256
Comments: Mixed reviews as to how they treat Trans folks. They have a long history of not getting it and not caring, but more people are starting to say that they like the care they’re receiving there. Those over 30 will likely have an easier time with them.
Post-transition/post-operative clients seeking routine medical care have been incorrectly routed to the Trans program.

David Seil, M.D.

BOSTON MA 02118-3407
1617 536 2665
Board-certified psychiatrist, member of WPATH. Evaluation and psychotherapy for those seeking gender transition. General psychiatry for Transgenderists, TVs, their families and partners. Referrals within J. Michael Rowan, MSW, LICSW.

Sydney Borum Health Centre
130 BOYLSTON ST
BOSTON MA 02116-4608
1617 457 8140
Web site: http://sidneyborum.org/

  • Part of Fenway Health as of 01 August 2010. Accepts insurance plans and will work to have patient’s insurance company pay if the company initially refuses. The Borum will work with individuals who have limited or no ability to pay for treatment.
  • A few people have had trouble getting hormones here, and there are horror stories from years ago, but overall, Transphobic attitudes seem to be a thing of the past at this clinic. Melissa MacNish is a great counsellor, and she will write letters. Dr Ralph Vetters is comfortable prescribing and monitoring hormones, and is very respectful. This is an excellent first stop for folks who are also dealing with homelessness or other kinds of marginalisation (there are barrels of free condoms as well as general hygiene products), and for the most part, the staff** will work with you and whatever insurance you have to get you the care you need. They refer out to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre for specialised care.
  • Note: There is an upper-limit on age at this clinic! It occasionally changes, but usually patients must be under 31.
  • Beware the front desk staff: they are constantly rotating mêlée of interns, and range from dumb and belligerent to savvy and kind.
  • This is a good place for Trans people to get tested for STDs and HIV. Medical practitioners are respectful and knowledgeable. Mick Rehrig is an excellent counsellor who will write letters and, in addition to knowing well the other resources available at both the Borum and and at Fenway Health, has knowledge of Trans related resources outside the offices.

Psychotherapist with more than 15 years’ experience provides psychotherapy and divorce mediation for crossdressers, transsexual and Transgender people, and their partners. Does phone sessions for people who aren’t close by.

  • Note: Not highly recommended for general therapy, but if all you want is a letter for T and/or surgery, she’s extremely cooperative. She does require a minimum of 12 sessions prior to writing a letter and often requires far longer.
  • Rigid old-style approach with many mandates and a great deal of control exerted over clients.
  • Forces self-medicating clients to cease treatment rather than providing letters under the WPATH Standards of Care’s exemption for self-medicating.
  • Will not provide patient records upon proper request if you change therapists.
  • Younger transitioners complain of pressure to conform to outdated gender stereotypes.

NOT RECOMMENDED. Many people found him not only unhelpful, but found their interactions with him to be upsetting or even traumatising. He also apparently uses a very outdated version of the Standards of Care – i.e., only traditional straight-appearing ‘people born in the wrong body’ who are stable and willing to see him for a year need apply.
